Sony's packaging for the WH-1000XM5 reflects the premium positioning, though with increased use of recycled materials compared to previous generations. The unboxing experience reveals the headphones nestled in a soft-touch carrying case that, while larger than competitors, provides excellent protection. Inside, you'll find the headphones, a USB-C charging cable, a 3.5mm audio cable for wired listening, an airplane adapter, and documentation. The first impression holding the XM5 is how remarkably light they feel - at 250 grams, noticeably lighter than the XM4 despite similar dimensions. The new design is sleeker, with a seamless headband that no longer folds but provides a more refined aesthetic. Our black unit has a smooth, matte finish that resists fingerprints well, and the synthetic leather padding on the earcups and headband feels immediately comfortable. The overall impression is of refined elegance that matches the refined performance.

Sony's V1 processor, combined with the QN1 audio processor, enables noise cancellation that genuinely leads the industry. Eight microphones work in concert to analyze and cancel ambient sound across an impressively wide frequency range, from the rumble of aircraft engines to the chatter of office conversations. The improvement over the XM4 is noticeable, particularly in mid-frequency noise cancellation where human voices live. Multipoint connection allows simultaneous pairing with two devices - switch between laptop and phone seamlessly. Speak-to-Chat automatically pauses music when you start talking, while Quick Attention mode lets you hear your surroundings by cupping the earcup.

Our ANC testing methodology, using calibrated measurements in controlled environments, confirmed the XM5 blocks more ambient noise than any competing headphone across the frequency spectrum.
