Sony WF-1000XM5 Review: The ANC Earbuds Champion

Sony presents the WF-1000XM5 in thoughtfully designed packaging that hints at the premium experience inside. Opening the box reveals the compact charging case, noticeably smaller than the XM4 despite housing larger battery capacity. The earbuds themselves are 25% smaller and 20% lighter than their predecessors, addressing the most common complaint about the XM4's bulky fit. Inside, you'll find an impressive selection of ear tips - foam tips in SS, S, M, L sizes and silicone tips in the same sizes, allowing extensive fit customization. A USB-C cable rounds out the package. Our black unit has a matte finish that looks premium but, as we'd discover, attracts fingerprints. The first impression holding these earbuds is how compact they are for the technology they contain - Sony has achieved something remarkable with the miniaturization here.

This is achieved through a combination of improved microphone placement, advanced algorithms, and the Dynamic Driver X - a new 8.4mm driver designed specifically for these earbuds that delivers exceptional sound quality across the frequency spectrum. LDAC support enables Hi-Res Audio streaming at up to 990kbps, preserving detail that Bluetooth normally discards. DSEE Extreme upscales compressed audio in real-time, improving the quality of Spotify and Apple Music streams. The Sony Headphones Connect app provides extensive customization, including a parametric EQ, adaptive sound control that adjusts settings based on your activity, and Speak-to-Chat that automatically pauses music when you start speaking. The ambient sound mode is adjustable across 20 levels, from slight awareness to full transparency. Bone conduction sensors improve voice pickup for calls, ensuring clear communication even in noisy environments.

Our comprehensive ANC testing confirmed the WF-1000XM5 as the benchmark for true wireless earbuds. Using calibrated measurements in controlled environments, we found these earbuds match or exceed the AirPods Pro 2 in noise cancellation across virtually all frequencies, with particularly impressive performance in mid-range frequencies where human voices and office noise live. The practical experience is remarkable - put these in and the world fades away more effectively than any competing earbuds. Sound quality testing was equally impressive. Quick charging works well, with 3 minutes providing about an hour of playback.
