Unboxing & First Impressions
Apple's iPhone 16 Pro packaging continues the company's environmental commitment with fully recycled materials and minimal waste. Inside, you'll find the iPhone 16 Pro, a USB-C braided cable, and documentation - nothing else, as has become standard. Immediately noticeable is the larger display - Apple has increased the screen from 6.1" to 6.3" by reducing the bezels to an industry-leading thinness. This creates more viewing area without making the device larger than the iPhone 15 Pro. Our Desert Titanium unit showcases Apple's refined finish, with the titanium frame feeling premium and lightweight. The new Camera Control button on the lower right side is the most significant physical interface addition since Face ID, providing a touch-sensitive surface for camera adjustments. The action button returns, maintaining the customization options introduced last year. Overall, this feels like a refinement of an already excellent design rather than a revolution.
Features Deep Dive
Apple Intelligence represents Apple's entry into on-device AI, and while features are rolling out gradually, the foundation is impressive. Writing Tools appear system-wide, allowing text rewriting, summarization, and tone adjustment in any application. Siri understands context better than ever, maintaining conversation threads and accessing on-screen content for relevant responses. The new Photos app uses AI to create automatic memories, while image generation through Image Playground creates personalized illustrations. The Camera Control button is brilliantly implemented - a light press activates the camera, sliding adjusts zoom or other settings, and a firm press captures. It takes about an hour to internalize the gestures, after which it feels like the obvious way to control a phone camera. The 5x telephoto camera comes to the smaller Pro for the first time, eliminating one of the few remaining reasons to choose the larger Pro Max. Video capabilities expand to 4K120fps recording, enabling professional slow-motion capture previously requiring dedicated equipment.
Real-World Testing
Performance testing confirmed the A18 Pro maintains Apple's silicon leadership, with benchmark scores exceeding even the already-excellent A17 Pro. More importantly, thermal management has improved significantly - the iPhone 16 Pro runs cooler during sustained loads, addressing one of the few complaints about its predecessor. Gaming sessions showed consistent frame rates without the throttling some users experienced on the 15 Pro. Battery life showed modest improvement, with our testing yielding approximately 11 hours of screen-on time during mixed usage. The larger display consumes slightly more power, but efficiency improvements compensate. Charging speeds remain unchanged, with 20W being Apple's conservative maximum. Camera testing showed incremental improvements to processing and low-light performance, with the 5x telephoto matching the quality previously exclusive to the Pro Max. Apple Intelligence features we could test performed well, with Writing Tools particularly impressive for email and document composition. The gradual feature rollout means full evaluation will require months of updates.

Final Verdict
The iPhone 16 Pro represents a careful evolution of Apple's flagship, with the larger display, Camera Control, and Apple Intelligence providing meaningful upgrades. The reduction in bezel size without increasing device dimensions is the kind of engineering refinement Apple excels at, making this the most display-forward Pro iPhone yet. Camera Control, while requiring learning, becomes intuitive quickly and genuinely improves the photography experience. Apple Intelligence is harder to evaluate given the gradual rollout, but the foundation suggests transformative potential for how we interact with our devices. For users on iPhone 13 Pro or earlier, this is an unequivocal upgrade across every dimension. For iPhone 15 Pro owners, the upgrade is more nuanced - Apple Intelligence alone may justify it for productivity-focused users, but the hardware changes are incremental. At $999 starting, the iPhone 16 Pro remains expensive but delivers technology and experience that justify the premium for those invested in the Apple ecosystem.
